a plastic plate that floats is better hun
and yea.. first timers you have to give them atleast 3 full tries to get it right before counting them as bad/hard breeders

Re: black orchid spawn
well this morning was VERY bad for me
On the advice of Kelly she recommended trying the female with the nest as Lucy did most of the work originally - with just a few of the eggs.
i did this and she is an AMAZING mom - she is tending the nest, putting back fallen eggs and making more bubbles!
the only issue I had this morning was I had put Spikey in a breeding trap so I could feed him up after the spawn and woke this morning to around 100 eggs surrounding him! The reason he wouldnt tend the nest is he had his gob full!!
Syphoned up the eggs and put them back in the breeding tank - but when I tried to turkey baster them onto the plate I blew more off!!
In the end though, as soon as I realised what a good mother Lucy was I have put all eggs on the floor by the nest and she has duly sucked them up and spat in the nest
Now its up to Lucy and nature XD
She still has breeding bars!

Re: black orchid spawn
I knew she was gonna be one of those rare perfect breeders... treat her like gold dust!!
the little gem
For anyone new to breeding, this method is the complete opposite way to do things and its very rare it works so it must be tried with caution and also expect that 99% of the time, leaving a female with the eggs will result in them all being ate within minutes.

Re: black orchid spawn
congratulations hun
(yes, the world of caution was for those who are completely new just incase they thought this is the standard way of doing things)
it's hard to see the centre of the nest but i'm sure there's more in there, as they get more active you should start to see more.
keep a close eye on lucy incase she does decide to eat them, fingers crossed she wont but even males will occasionally eat the fry in first days before removal so it is possible.
You're doing well!
As soon as free swimming you remove her and feed fry the vinegar eel or microworms, at around day 6-7 you start the bbs but it is worth hatching a tiny trial batch now so you know how long it takes to hatch and have a rough idea of how much shrimp you'll get.

Re: black orchid spawn
hope he recovers fast hun
poor guy
hopefully the babies will be horizontally swimming tomz morning so you can remove lucy too
then you will be really underpressure with feeding her up again, getting him treated and fry with cultures.

lol dont!
He is tubbed with meth blue and floating his tub in the main tank so as to keep him heated.
Lucy is keeping well - I have a feeling she has eaten my baby cherry shrimps lol
As for keeping the cultures - I'm pants!!

I have DEFFO seen one swimming around and it is using the IAL as a home to lay on and maybe seen a second
Removed lucy and she is in a floating trap - has been fed and keeping an eye on any infections
