It's all sounding very positive so far! Especially if the male is intent on building a nice nest and the female is liking it.
I prefer the larger tanks for spawning, as you only fill it up to about 5", it allows for a bigger volume of water and thus less build up of waste. I've lost a few spawns due to bad water quality and I've never looked back on my upgrade. However, many people seem to get on fine with the smaller tanks.
I'd put some real plants in there. You don't need to bury them, just have them floating on the surface. They won't die and the fish will appreciate it. I use the cut-offs from my community tank.
Then again, all that I've said is down to personal experience. I'm sure many people would say it's all unnecessary lol
