Re: Finally a new spawn!
Lousy nights sleep of course. Took a peek this morning and Red hadn't eaten them, nor had he picked any up. Dozens of eggs under the nest on the bottom of the tank. I made a quick decision and siphoned the eggs into an empty clean 10 gallon tank to about 3/4 of an inch, then added methylene blue. Last time I tried this was in a NOT clean tank and they died a week after hatching. The Butterfly looks like he's caring for his so far. Off to work, doing a double today so it will drive me crazy not being able to check on progress until tonight.

Re: Finally a new spawn!
ohh i hope they work out this time for you hun
it's so frustrating when they just won't do what they should
in the new tank it's worth using some of the safe start/ new tank filter boosters to help keep the water good while it's not gonna be filtered with so little water in it.
With known munchers i will often put half the eggs into a shallow plate floating in the same tank.. reserve incase daddy does munch, once hatched i would tranfer them into a breeding net still in the tank..
more chance of having atleast a few fry if dad gets hungry but still gives him the experience and time to show if he may have grown out of the habbit resulting in a reasonable batch of fry regardless of the stolen ones.

Re: Finally a new spawn!
Both Big Red and the Green Butterfly still have eggs in the nest. I siphoned off the ones on the bottom of the green ones tank and put them in a shallow container with methylene blue like I did with the red ones. They both mated in the evening yesterday the 22nd so between the morning and tomorrow evening the 24th I should know if they are going to hatch and whether or not the boys are going to take care of them or disappoint me and eat them again.

Re: Finally a new spawn!
They both have a few hatchlings, more of them lying on the bottom than in the nest. I saw one fry in the 10 gallon and took the cover off the container with the butterflies eggs and they were spinning in circles all over the top of the water!!!!! Now if I can get them past that first week. 5 foot 11inches, 220 lbs. of hard working butt kickin' man and I'm a nervous wreck over some teeny weeny fish eggs. What a push over, no wonder my kids are rotten.

Re: Finally a new spawn!
Came home from work after 9 tonight and still have fry in both males tanks and the ones I put by themselves. I took the males out and siphoned their tanks down to 2 inches. The last time the red Halfmoon had fry he ate them about 10 or 12 hours before they were free swimming and I would have taken him out. They are not quite free swimming hence the lowering of the water but I don't want to push it with either male and removed that part of the equation. Now if I can keep most of the dozens of fry alive I'll be pickled tink or vice versa. Going to try this with the blue Giant this weekend but the 4 ray female that I just bought and bred with my Black Orchid CT died 2 days after spawning so I'll be waiting and searching for another one.

Re: Finally a new spawn!
I have over 50 fry from the Butterfly, a few dozen Red Halfmoon babies and maybe (MAYBE) a dozen in the Giants tank. Thought I'd try one of the Copper/Gold CT females I raised with the Black Orchid male and they spawned yesterday. He's already eaten most of them before I discovered them this morning.

Re: Finally a new spawn!
i'm all excited.. how you get a few of those giants to hatch
we've not had much luck with them.. so slow to mature to want to breed, male killed a female in one blow, lost about 6 giants in shipping
they're frustration beyond belief!
late maturity, don't ship well, small egg count and either heavy weight aggressive or disinterested! lol
think turts would like to have another attempt with a new pair some time soon
we've still got one big red dragon giant boy but he's old old (2yrs approx)and a red giant female(about 11 months old now), they're in spawn tank at mo but unlikely to spawn.. male boy is just too old now and not interested (lazy bugger and always has been). It's just a last ditch attempt with the big guy.
Good luck with those spawns hun, let us know how it goes!

Re: Finally a new spawn!
I took the male out a day after they hatched to make sure he didn't eat them all. Fed them infusoria for two days and now eating bbs. He is so mild mannered for a male let alone for a Giant male. My other two are pretty aggressive. I think having a trollop for a female helps as well. I've had her with a few other males and the last couple she's torn up pretty good so I figured I'd try her with the Giant. I just put them in cups in a breeder tank for round three and maybe get a better fry count.

Re: Finally a new spawn!
She's not a slut she's experienced and does tricks for pellets! I also have to tell you that I have been adding my oak leaf tea at about 4 gallons conditioned and aged (a week or so) water to one gallon tea. It's just dark enough to look like weak tea. That has been the key to all my recent success.

Turt you are correct, she is a tramp. I put them together just before lights out last night and as soon as I let in the sunlight this morning they went at it immediately. Wam, bam thank you Mam!

Re: Finally a new spawn!
I can hardly believe it, here I was thinking Wow!: I've been having a complete turn around on my spawns and all I 'm lacking is for my big beautiful Gold/White BFHM to make babies. Vwalla there they go. So totally stoked am I!!! I'm going to need more brine shrimp eggs and one gallon olive jars to hatch them in.He look fat to you?Ah, he wont miss these two Gulp, gulp! I'm sure he wont mind if I Chew, chew; swallow. I may be pulling some to hatch on the side.

I reckon if you get that dragon spawned you'll be far to busy to spawn yourself
