Purple Bettas
I went back through my posts looking to do an update on my Purple Bettas and realised I hadn't done one so here they are. These are 3 of the males. I had a pair spawn yesterday so I'll have a 6 to 8 week waiting period to see if Purple got passed on to the fry. They are from a spawn between a (what Petco is calling) a "King" male and a regular sized Veiltail female. The Kings look like Half Giant Plakats and the offspring from that spawn are large but not Giant sized.

Re: Purple Bettas
Those are three different males. I had 8 males and 8 females from that spawn with this coloring. The rest were Royal Blue with Red fins. Another spawning of the mother of this spawn produced 2 each of male and female with purple bodies while the rest of them looked like alligator watermelon Green and Red fins so I'm guessing the color came from the mother.

Re: Purple Bettas
LOL BettaLover! I was thinking the same thing! Chard, your first post made it sound like you were showing us the parents to whet our appetite for what's to come lol.
The first chap has a really nice purple colour to his body. It's a shame about the red fins. I read that purple is one of those 'lucky' colours, that it doesn't breed true. How would you breed the red ourto of the fins? By selective breeding of offspring or would you reintroduce another blue or something?

Re: Purple Bettas
That's a good question. I haven't found much info on the color Purple so I'm winging it. If the offspring (F1) have purple bodies I'm on to something and I'll worry about the Red fins further down the road. I'll do an F2 spawning if I don't get any Purple in F1. I haven't read any articles that have explained this color other than that there isn't a Purple gene and nobody seems to have reproduced it in the fry. I haven't read about any follow up spawnings or anything to explain where it comes from other than people who have read Victoria's article about it being Royal Blue then they claim that my Purple bodied Bettas are just Royal Blue at the right angle to look Purple. I've taken pictures of them with flash, without flash and in natural lighting to try and prove it really is this color. So I guess I'm on my own on this adventure.

Re: Purple Bettas
I've always liked Purple and Yellow. I've been thinking of doing that color scheme on my "73 Ford Maverick. I took the Daddy out today and didn't think there were very many looking at the nest but then I looked across the top and they are scattered from one end to the other. Looks to be over a hundred. I have to admit the first one looks far more purple to me. Which did you use here? And which female?

Oh she's a lovely deep purple colour. It'd be amazing if you could get that colour to covered your fry's heads too!

Re: Purple Bettas
Well time flies when you're busy with a whole lot of fry to raise. It's been a month since this spawning took place so here's some pictures of the fry. It looks like maybe some purple coloring coming in. I won't be sure for another couple weeks.

Re: Purple Bettas
Not in the immediate future! Not until I get an established strain anyway. OR the color is a complete flop then It wouldn't matter. I will keep that in mind though!

Re: Purple Bettas
I thought I'd do an update since you can actually see the fry now. They are going on 3 months old. About 1/4th of the fry are Purple, Purple and Red with a few that look Purple Gas. The rest are Green/Red and Blue/Red.

They do look purple. Well done Chard. The gas could look like our college colors.
Will you save me one if you get enough?

Re: Purple Bettas
I'll let you know in about 5 or 6 months when the fry from these grows out. I don't have a lot of them from this spawn now. I'm hoping to spawn one of the females back to the father so I'll get a better percentage of purple instead of 1/8th to 1/4th that I've gotten so far.

Re: Purple Bettas
if you still have the first bettas breed him back with the mother then pick out another male with less red in the fins and breed him back with the mother eventually the red will get less once you then do the same with another pair from the same spawn you may just get a all purple male female can take years...

Re: Purple Bettas
they're fairly hoding the body colour already.. you may have the next $100 a pair aquabid sellers soon... please please keep this lot going hun!
the fry do look purple and not royal blue... even if you only get body colour constant purple you have achieved what many breeders dream of

Re: Purple Bettas
I also did a spawn with a Purple/Red male to one of my Blue Lace females that had a Purple caste to her. They're much younger but I can see some Purplish colored ones in there too. The grandmother to this coloring is also the grandmother of my Dragons. 2tall's Gold Delta is from the Dragon line. I'll never know if it came from the grandmother's side or grandfather's. Unless 2tall comes up with some. I rather doubt they would produce from the Gold strain but hey, who knows?
