New spawning set up Empty New spawning set up

Post by Nataliey Sun Jul 24, 2011 1:10 am

I decided to set up a new spawning tank i find that some of my bettas dont have a lot of room in the 17 litre square tank while they are spawning especially when the female is being chased!

So iv now set up my 27 litre clear seal tank for my next spawning pair...its rectangle shape and im planning on putting more hiding places in for the female as iv only got 1 medium silk plant in and a coconut cave in.

I put my newest male in yesterday and about an hour ago today put the female in the chimney...which has perked up the male as he was just sitting about looking bored! He keeps swimming over to her flarring up his tail and beard wiggling and swimming over to his IAL and putting some bubbles underneath...he looks very happy now he's got company!

    Heres the spawning tank:

    AND

Here's the male he's a HM dragon and i bought him from Steve Bell he was my replacement male as the first one i was sent unfortunately arrive as a DOA.

This is the female she is a HM dragon also and was bought also as an import from my local Pier Aquatics in Wigan.

Looks exactly the same as my setup, but my main (well only) spawning tank is 86L so I can fill it up more as the fry grow to use as my growout tank. Only £35 for Clearseal 86L, bargain!

Did you put a light in your clearseal tank?

Thats the only thing i have a problem about these tanks no lights hence why they are so cheap...im going to cut a piece of clear perspex to fit just on the inside on the glass ledges which is on the inside of the tank so as much natural light can get in as possible.

His tail has regrown about a quarter of the way its growing pretty fast to be honest...and he's built me nest already just over night hoping he'l build it bigger by the time he spawns with the female. Il try get a photo so you can see Smile

At least i know with this new spawning tank they can just stay in it without the need to move to a bigger tank where as the 17 litre was okay up until they where about 3 months old then needed to be moved.

He looks so much better Nat, its amazing how quick fins grow isn't it! Nest is looking good, all looks very promising Nat!

I imagine it would be streesful for them and at such a young age that can't be good.

How long do you condition your pairs Nat? i've heard differences between 1 week and 3 weeks lol

This is only the second day i usually condition them for at least a week and a half (im impatient hate to wait!!) but if still not ready i leave them for at least 2 weeks...really depends on the pair and how they are acting towards one another. After about a week i let the female have a swim with the male.

I let them swim a little together last night and to my suprise they got on quite well and im very happy about the pair, they swam round together like old friends! But id say the female will have him under the thumb in no time as she was definately in charge last night. He kept follwoing her around and then they'd look at the nest and have a swim.

So i put the female back in the chimney as i know she's not been conditioned enough yet but very happy with their behavour together.
