Hello guys my real names Joshua , I'm 20 years old mainly a cichlid ,catfish and pleco keeper at heart but had seen my SFF in the Local Pet Shop and immediately bought him , without thought of a tank or heater or filter haha! I had read about them before but was put off by the short life span and anyway as I got home I realised I didn't get a tank or anything for that matter luckily I have a 5gallon tank for temporary use then ran back to the pet shop bought a bio-foam filter and a heater and a plant , had him 2 days so far and for company he has made friends with a silver tipped tetra what my local PS must have thrown in by accident (he shows no signs of aggression at all except to my finger)
and any way that is my betta story of how I became so fascinated Very Happy

Oh the water was pre cycled from my old tank and at the moment around the filter is my fluval u4 sponge held on by elastic bands until next week when the bio foam sponge has cycled from a bigger tank

nice to meet you all and will be looking forward to chatting with you all in the near future Very Happy

you're going to love him even more as his personality shows, the more you interact with him the more he'll respond Wink

he'll be eating out of your hand in no time but do be aware they are good jumpers so lids are a good thing!

hi and welcome lol (bit late soz)

It's nice to see you thought about his living conditions so quick, most people learn the hard way cos they are ill and need help.

Do let us know how he gets on and have you thought of a name for him yet?

(A 4 ft tank you could probably split into 6 easily and still give ample room each Wink )

Don't start thinking of breeding or you're in trouble lol
You'll end up with 30 permanent residents and they do take over the house... be warned! Very Happy

I do know some people place them in vases :S i saw it on google but i was thinking of space for them and its allso getting my hands in tight spaces what i hate because it doesn't give me much design space witch is why ill be getting plenty more space for him for my hand to swim belong side him lol Razz

as for the tank its got about 1-2 inch from the water level to the top Very Happy .

keep under the 2" tank waterline if it's an open tank, you don't want to find him on the floor

stick a wanted post for a green betta in the members sales section when you're sorted for space, I'll also keep an eye out for you mate.

I may possibly have one available in a few weeks but can't promise anything at the minute.

Ohh yeah I never mentioned it but my local pet shop now sells Siamese fighter fish for about £5 unless they are reserved and looking around on ebay and some other shops they go for quite a bit more

if anyone is interested I can take some pictures they get deliveries every Wednesday I have seen dark ones purple ones blue ones and pink and red&blue ones so far , not sure about finnage though most of them are like mine and they are imports ,I got most of my fish from them and so far only 3 fish has ever died on me but that could be due to stress of moving them from one tank to another so fast as I am all ways in there on Wednesday and they put them in on Wednesday , they do advise you to comeback next week when they have settled a little but I bought stress coat and so far all 13 of 17 have survived , one recently died witch was from my main tank due to getting stuck under the gravel during feeding time never noticed until I cleaned the tank out. Sad

    quick note*

It usual to get bettas from local pet shop for around £5 price, this is great for a feature fish but they aren't so good for breeding.

Quality bettas that are line bred (koi alternative in minature fish) you want line bred and finnage plays big factor in this.

pure clean colours, solid bands of mixed colours, halfmoon, double ray crowntails, butterfly etc. are all higher priced. veiltails and basic crowntails are standard pet shop stock.

show quality bettas range in price from £10-£50 although even lfs often charge £30 for hm finnage bettas even if not line bred.

What you spend should reflect on your goal... breeding then you need the quality, pretty fish as a feature then £5 lfs buy works great unless you want something that really stands out.

Betta enthusiasts think nothing of paying £8-9 for posting costs on top of fish actual cost! The results of spawns are what make it most worthwhile.

Ahh ty Kel I never knew that Very Happy , well im still after a green betta male and then most possibly a female one later on If money permits , my first betta is just mainly a show fish as I loved the finnage , my main priority is the green and blue coulours and the double ray crowntail and just crown tails in my opinion look the best i'd love something like this Very Happy

To sell them so cheap, the ones lfs get in are usually 'box fillers'. They just ask the supplier to add a few bettas to a box of something else. An lfs couldn't cope with a full box of bettas lol. So the supplier will generally get rid of the stock he couldn't sell.
