SD X HM melano hatched 17/6/11 Empty SD X HM melano hatched 17/6/11

Post by Nataliey Mon May 30, 2011 2:18 am

Conditioned the black HM female for well over a week now and the male just about a week and they've finally decided they want to spawn. Let them swim about together yesterday for about an hour then put her back in her chimney.

Today at about 1.30 i decided to try again as the female looked promising and the male no aggression towards her while in the chimney.

My thoughts where right and the females stripes came up really bright creamy colour looked like a zebra when she went near the male who was just under his nest, there was a few flares and a nip or 2 and then they wrapped withing a least a few minutes of being together. They are still wrapping now about an hour into wrapping the female started to drop eggs, only a few at first but now they seem to be wrapping as soon as all the eggs are picked up and into the nest.

Iv got a video and a few photos (i didnt want to putr them off, up in their face with a camera!) so il put those up later when i have a bit of spare time.

The male is the same male i used for my 1st successful spawn (Earl Grey) with the copper HM female i got from Kel, the female this time is stated to be a black melano HM female and i know that black melanos are infertile but i doubt she's pure melano as she has the blue tinge to her scales so i guess il wait and see what happens. Im really hoping for fry as my other spawn is almost grown up!

Last time he was a really good dad looking after the eggs even though i did curse him a few times as i thought he'd eaten them but in actual fact he'd pushed the eggs right into the bubbles...iv got my fingers crossed that the same will happen and il have fry in a couple of days.

You can see the blue in the females tail and a blue sheen on her body, the male looks as if he has a similar sheen but his sheen is silvery grey

Well the main thing about this situation im telling you about is that i now know my HM black melano female isnt a pure melano as she's fertile and i DID have tiny tails hanging from the nest this morning, but when i checked when i got home from work all the little tails are gone and there are no traces of them anywhere...yes if you havent already guessed my excitement of getting new fry is wasted yet again and im FURIOUS at the male he'll be in the dog house for a while!

He did well up until the tails where hanging but when they where dropping from the nest they where wiggling so maybe he couldnt resist the wiggling and gobbled them up!

Although he was good last time!

As i mentioned iv been reconditioning these 2 and i nipped in the kitchen to take a look at my fishies and to my suprise the little girl has somehow got out the chimney and is currently wrapping with the male! But i cant see them properly as they are right round the back of the tank amongst all the plants n leaves!!!!

So i cant get any photos of their antics!

The female is striped up like a little tiger Very Happy

Thanks Kel i set up the tank differently this time with more leaves for more bubbles, so hopefully he'll look after them and not eat them.

I have noticed he has moved them from where they where firstly put when the female was in there.

When my bettas decided that it was time to spawn did they know that it was going to rain heavily as to why they decided it was time rather than me (female got out the chimney herself!)

Oh and iv still got eggs moved again but i still have them Very Happy

It rains here in Missouri quit a lot and the female jumping out of the cup happens often especially when a storm's coming in. I can be sitting at the 'puter desk and a front moves in, which immediately knocks me out; I wake up an hour later with my hand still on the mouse (with a crick in my neck) and go check to see if they've started spawning.
