I noticed several of my DT's had a little gap in their bottom caudal lobe. So I looked through the 60 some males and found one with an exaggerated separation. He looks to have three tails. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] You can see the small split in the bottom lobe on Fabio here and there were others with a similar gap. Re: Tripletail
the 3 tail one.. is that a natural split in his anal fin too or is it nipping damage?
would be an interesting project to try to breed but with the amount of possible culls required it not a decision I'd want to take lightly

Re: Tripletail
I don't know about the anal split but the caudal division is apperent in several others. I'll have to think about this mutation for a while before deciding whether to pursue it or not.kel wrote:the 3 tail one.. is that a natural split in his anal fin too or is it nipping damage?

Re: Tripletail
I have one month old fry from the tripletailed one at the top and a sibling female DT. Here are a few of their brothers including a quadrupletailed one. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Re: Tripletail
The gold certainly looks like he has four different lobes. Are you going to work on that and try to separate them further? Did you get many 'food for the oscar' in this spawn?

Re: Tripletail
I didn't get a single one that I would have fed to my Oscar. (RIP Oscar) There is one or two with a little bend in the caudal peduncle but otherwise the deformaties seem to be in the amount of caudal peduncle tail roots. I have already spawned the triple tail at the top of the post but didn't realize that the bottom one looked this way or I would have spawned him instead. I have about 80 to 100 fry and so far I can see 2 or 3 with a little more curve in their peduncle and several single tailed individuals. They are too small yet to tell if the Doubletails are split into three or four. Maybe another 2 to 3 weeks and then I'll be able to tell with my thickest reading glasses.

Re: Tripletail
After 20 minutes of frustratingly cursing and trying to get a decent picture I gave up. Here's the lousy pictures I got. It looks like some of them have the split bottom lobe but I can't tell yet. I'll have to wait another few weeks probably. Once they're full grown I can focus my camera on them better. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Re: Tripletail
This spawn is finally big enough to see pretty good. I'll start jarring males this week. Here are a few pictures of a male with the most separation into three tails. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Re: Tripletail
isn't he pretty
His fins also look really well proportioned in length, it'll be great to see him fully grown!

Re: Tripletail
Are these the fry of the fish at the start of the thread? It's exciting if it is a genetic trait. The fish look really nice

Re: Tripletail
The first male at the top of this post is the father. So far it looks to be genetic and is able to be passed on to the next generation. I don't want to spawn a sibling pair or a daughter back to the father because I'm afraid of getting a bunch of deformed fry so I plan on spawning a three tailed male from this spawn to a related female DT from a Gold Dragon spawn that has a similar looking tail.

Re: Tripletail
What does the mother of this lot of fry look like? It's definitely exciting if it is genetic. Would really like to know how it works and if it increases deformities.

Re: Tripletail
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] I think this is the mother. She had the small upper lobe like that. I've been having DT's show up in my Gold Copper spawns for over three years and never bred for DT specifically. I would use a DT female every second or third generation to try and get extended dorsals in my males. Up until this last spring I would get extended dorsals in the females but not in the males and a lot of the DT's had the small upper caudal lobes. I don't know if it's genetically moving the top lobe up to make room for a third one but there are (so far) not very many deformities in the offspring. There might have been one out of the original 619 fry that had a noticable bend in the caudal base. There were 4 or 5 females with single tails and that many or more males with just a few rays in the upper lobe. The F2 spawn has a couple fry with bent caudal peduncles and small upper caudal lobes but that's about it. Like everyother odd or different trait I stumble upon there just isn't any literature on the subject and what little there is, is inconclusive.

Re: Tripletail
Here's a few more odd tailed ones. First is one of the dark Gold/Yellow ones. I guess you'd call his color intense Gold. He has the little top caudal fin and sort of a small one at the bottom. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]Then there's these two from a totally different spawn. They do have Great Grandparents in common with the tripletailed Gold spawn. Re: Tripletail
The one is definitely an intense gold.
