My Boys

4 months ago I had no fish and had never heard of bettas. I hadn't realised bettas were as addictive as hamsters! After a traumatic start to fish keeping, I now have 2 male bettas.I use bottled water as it turns out that pH shock was what killed all the preceding fish. My boys come from the local chain pet shop who has given more sensible advice than the specialised fish ones.

Hamlet lives in a 25l fluval chi with 2 zebra nerite snails. I think he's a blue veiltail but will be happy to be corrected!

The Prince of Denmark followed me home from the pet shop on Wednesday. I think he's a red delta. He's temporarily in a 7L tank (please don't tell me off too much) until I pick up his 28L aqua one on monday.

I heard that bettas were fussy eaters. Well, not my boys! I wouldn't have believed fish could be such characters, but now I'm a betta convert!

they are like aquatic puppies given the chance to show their personalities!

Congratulations vectis, blue boy is vt but has a lot of tail so has some hm in background but not enough to carry the tail width.

No. 2 is delta, vt/hm cross but much more of the hm genes present.

the fin shapes don't mean a thing if they are pets, vt's have as much personalitie as hm's etc. just harder to shift vt babies than hm ones which it what puts serious betta people off them.

7ltrs is on the small side but fine for short term or if breeding and not stuck in that size of tank forever plus filter and heater are hard to mantain in small tanks.

I would be contradicting myself if I said it was wrong, many of mine are in 2-11ltr tanks for up to 8 weeks before going to bigger tanks but again it's filtration/heat and water changes to keep them good in those conditions and upgrade first chance you can to give them quality of life with a stabilised tank and swimming room that is most important.
