I dont want to get my hopes up but my tri colour HMPK has built me a big bubble nest...Iv been conditioning him for around a week now.

Im undecided on what female to use with him but iv been conditioning all 3 potential girls which out of 3 only really 2 are starting to look eggy and interested...his match isnt interested what so ever (typical!)

So at the minute its a decision between my white HMPK or my dragon HM female, im going to wait another couple of days and maybe try the dragon female as shes had experiance with spawning before and id love fry from her.

These are the bettas in question, please tell me what you think:

    The male (Rainbow)

you've a lot of rays going on there, expect a lot of delta types in the spawns regardless of the female you chose. your male and fm although male looks hmpk shape has loads of hm genes to carry on.

tri colour fm looks more hm than your male hmpk

blue with red wash dragon has 4 rays and looks closer to line established hmpk but red wash plus you again have many deltas and possibilitiy of wash instead of sperate bands.

White fm has best rays and fin length for hmpk breeding but again expect some deltas due to the male.

Out of all i think tri or white girl re best but expect the delta types in the spawn too as both the ri male and female don't look line bred long enough to produce 100% hmpk types.

Thanks Kel, none of the females seem ready so gonna carry on conditioning them just hope the male doesnt get bored!!

He can see all the girls from his tank so hopefully he wont.

His nest seems very thick at the moment rather than big in width...id say about as wide as the bottom of a standard mug and about 2 cm thick looks like a little hill.

The 2 females Kel suggested are quite small will this not affect wrapping when they get it together?

Hi Nat, just an off topic question, have you had storms around your area recently?

When it rains and I don't have any Bettas set up to spawn but I have some I'd like to, I hurry and setup a spawning tank. The rain seems to be an exellent trigger for their spawning instints.

small females will give you smaller eggs/fry but won't prevent spawning and producing fry... you do have to watch the male violence for lil girls but breeding smaller to large is ok... similar to dad to daughter of a spawn.

That's the case for most fish species. My boys always build a nest when I give them a water change. I guess that's their 'rainy season'. I've never paid any attention to the weather outside, though.

On another note. I'd pick the white girl :-) You should get less reds (hopefully) in the outcome.

It could do Nat, I think its something to do with the different atmospheric pressure... (wow I spelt that right first time!!)

If I had a barometer gauge I could probabaly tell just about when they're going to spawn.

as teri said above.i read on the net somewhere is wen LOW pressure comes in.
i also read on kg bettas that the moon has a little to do with nests and spawning,FULL moon is a good time to pair and spawn.
personally i agree with this!but who no`s so many spawns fail. Sad

Well i released the tri colour female with the tri colour male today as she looked ready but he totally shredded her tail and it looks like he's hurt her left eye.

Iv meth blue bathed her to see how much damage she's got and her eye looks sore so iv put her in a small tank and put myaxin in hopefully this will help her.

Why are HMPK's so aggressive towards the female?? Iv tried spawning HMPK's before and the same aggression from the male.

Lots and lots of hiding places because it definately has to be the females idea to come out and be persistant to put up with the male Plakat's nasty temper.

That's what mine did to the two different females I put with him. Then the second time with the first female they spawned and then again after 10 days so there's no telling what's going to trigger them to calm down and play nice nice with the female.
