Profile:Easily recognisable by even amateurs, goldfish have stunning colour that makes them stand out in a crowd. Wide but stocky heads, smoothly tapered body with a forked caudal (tail) fin complete with vibrant metallic orange colour. The majority of aquarists have probably started out with a goldfish won at a fairground. Common Goldfish are one of the most hardiest fish around. They're usually pretty active, will eat most things offered and with thrive in a wide range of conditions.
Common Goldfish are often mistakenly bought for small bowls. This really isn't acceptable as these little fish can actually grow to up to 12 inches long with the right conditions. They are messy eaters and do need adequate filtration to keep them in peak health.
Care and Feeding: Common Goldfish are omnivores so will nibble on live plants, eat flake, live foods and dried food whether vegetable and meat based. They will tolerate poor water quality and a small bowl for a while but to thrive then need proper conditions similar to which you would provide for any tropical fish.
Due to their messy eating habits they often produce a huge amount of waste in a short space of time so a good filter or frequent water changes are a must. An air stone in the water is always beneficial
Goldfish can handle a large range in temperature which is why they are well suited to ponds as well as larger aquariums. They are social creatures and will usually live fine amongst other fish providing the tank mates aren't too territorial or aggressive.
Comments: Goldfish make great beginner pets but be aware that their needs including filtration and tank size increases over time.
